When Melissa Chavarria first stepped onto the campus of St. Edwards University as a first-generation double major in Political Science and Sociology, she knew she was entering unfamiliar territory. What she didn’t know was that her passion for community outreach would transform her into a leader far beyond the classroom.

Today, Melissa stands as a voice for student inclusion and aims to elevate the communities that shaped her.

“I realized I was interested in supporting students' post-secondary journeys to help facilitate college access and non-college career journeys. So I joined a public charter school in Austin as a career integration specialist.”

Melissa’s work centers on empowering underserved communities with the knowledge and tools to advocate for college accessibility for undergraduate students. With her aim at early college schools, she is providing opportunities and resources for students to achieve college success.

“I am passionate about improving available tools, resources, and programs aimed at supporting students to achieve college success. At the moment, I am interested in Early College High Schools as an opportunity to build more than just college readiness but rather an opportunity to grant students the capital needed for social mobility once they enter a post-secondary institution.”

When asked what guidance she’d give students following in her footsteps, Melissa offered reassurance shaped by experience:

“I struggled with finding the right career journey. When I became an HSC scholar, I was given the opportunity to explore.”

And just like the scholars before her, Melissa acknowledges the setbacks that come with growth.

“During undergrad, I thought I was on the right career path. However, I lost my passion for that path because I felt it didn’t lend itself to support my community like I wanted to. I struggled with finding the right career journey.”

Melissa’s journey is a testament to the power of curiosity, purpose, and resilience. Through her academic work and research, she has become a leader in her community. Her story reminds us that creating lasting change begins with one person willing to learn, lead, and light the path forward for others.
