After three years of growing by
leaps and bounds, HSC’s Leadership Development Seminar grew into a full-blown
Scholar Leadership Conference in 2009. The conference is a series of premiere
training sessions designed to fully equip the students HSC serves with the tools
to succeed in college and beyond. Committed to offering more than financial
assistance, HSC sees the conference as an opportunity to provide essential
training ensuring a pipeline of success. The three-day event encompasses the
core pillars of the organization: leadership, professionalism, academic success,
collaboration and philanthropy.
30 professionals joined over 60
scholarship recipients and finalists for a social etiquette luncheon officially
kicking off the conference. Chairman Victor G. Carrillo, Chairman of the Texas
Railroad Commission, greeted the guests and shared his inspiring message with
them. Following the Chairman, Susan Brown, Assistant Dean for Development and
& Alumni Affairs for The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy,
led everyone through a hands-on social etiquette training over a four-course
meal.
Over 70 scholarship recipients
and finalists joined more than 20 presenters for the second day of the
conference. Students participated in sessions about presenting the
professional, civic engagement, résumés and interviewing skills, leveraging
professional resources, securing internships, pursuing graduate studies and a
special keynote address on life leadership by Sylvia Acevedo, President &
Founder of CommuniCard, LLC and member of the HSC Board of Directors. The group
reconvened on the last day for sessions about the critical choices in our lives,
philanthropy, leadership and team-building.
